My husband and I came here for dinner on a weeknight. We walked in and were immediately greeted by the bus person. The decor is a mix of southwest, Indian and Midwestern. We were told to sit wherever, and were greeted by our waitress who just happened to be one of the owners. She took our drink order and quickly returned with our drinks and chips and salsa. I ordered the small shrimp chimichangas, it had big pieces of shrimp, sauteed onions and peppers, tomatoes, and optional cheese. It was good, but HUGE, I can't even imagine what the large is. The place is clean, service o.k., we will be back to help support local business.

Had lunch here over the weekend and found it to have some really delicious food, everything was fresh. The salsa was clearly homemade and had a nice kick (we ordered the spicy version). The guacamole had clearly been made to order and was also delicious and fresh. We ordered something you don't see at a lot of Mexican places, Cocktail de Camarones (shrimp cocktail). On their menu they call it "shrimp in salsa". It was absolutely authentic, just like I've had in Mexico. There were four jumbo shrimp on the rim of the glass which was filled with a tangy, sweet/spicy tomato based salsa with large chunks of fresh avocado. We also ordered a fish taco. The fist that day was a beer-battered catfish. The fish was absolutely excellent, juicy and delicious. There is a very large selection of Mexican beers on hand (about 20 varieties) Service was attentive and friendly. Overall, really good food. I would definitely return. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Best food in Door County period. I've never had bad food here. Love the sauces. Love the pork burritos. Try it with a mix of their red and green sauces...Christmas style!!!

Some of the best and biggest steak tacos I have had in my life. The service was good and everyone I was with thoroughly enjoyed their food. If your in the area I would highly recommend stopping here.

Excellent burrito. The horchata was amazing! We were referred by a local shop owner who said it was great. He wasn't lying. Note: portions are huge. Small is fine unless you haven't eaten in a few days.

Biggest complaint: cleanliness. Food was okay. I really just couldn't get over the lack of upkeep and feeling that everything was dirty. Good service.

We moved here from the southwest, so we are used to good authentic Mexican food. Not too bad for a couple of gringos. The decor was interesting to say the least. Mexican, southwest, and Native American adorned the walls. There was soft rock and folk music playing in the background. What may lack in authenticity, is replaced with personality. One of the owners was our hostess, waitress, and I imagine also kitchen staff. The service was a little slow but she was quite personable. As I mentioned the food wasn't too bad. The portions were generous. My wife needed a to go box. The price was reasonable. We will be back again to try more items on the menu.

Went here expecting good Mexican food but it was very bad. Worst guacamole ever. And even the chili was extremely bad. I will not recommend this to anyone. If you want to hate Mexican food for life please go here.

If you really wanted authentic Mexican food, you probably would not stop at Hot Tamales. This place is VERY EXPENSIVE for what you get. A burrito is $9.95 for a small and $12.95 for a large. While a large burrito might be large enough for two people to share, it costs an additional $1.50 for a second plate. (yikes!) Our group of four adults and three children received a bill for over $70 -- and that was including a free children's meal for a birthday. Two children had ordered "Mexican Coke" (which is made with cane sugar, instead of high fructose corn syrup), and they each got a large 1/2 liter bottle, which was twice the size that was expected. The taste of the food is "ok", but it is certainly not worth the very high price that they charge. I think most people who are going to pay $15+/person for a meal, expect to be eating with good silverware and cloth napkins. However at Hot Tamales you get cheap-o silverware wrapped in a paper napkin. The decor of the restaurant is deplorable. Hot Tamales is a "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant with 4-star dining prices. If you want real authentic Mexican food (at reasonable prices), check out El Buen Sazon just south of town, about an mile south from Walgreens on the left.

I found this place to be a disappointment. Pricey and didn't have to be. Below average Mexican food. Advertises as a full bar, but only serves beer and wine. I wouldn't go back.

An authentic mexican restaurant in Door County. If you are looking for Chi-Chi's this isn't it, this is the real thing. We've eaten here several times while in Door County and each time is been very good. Food is fresh and homemade with the right amount of seasonings, cheese, etc... Decor could be stepped up a noche, but the food is really good - if you have a craving for true mexican food while in the area this is the place to go.

Really not very good. Confused service and undistinguished food. Too,bad as there is a need for some good Mexican food in the area.

Fantastic, varied menu, especially for vegetarians. Service was excellent. Our waitress, Lee Ann, was there with whatever we needed. The chips and salsa kept flowing. The vegan flautas were especially delicious as were the chile rellenos. Make sure your eyes aren't bigger than your stomach. I'm stuffed. Yum!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
